What is a Comprehensive Dental Exam?

To maintain excellent oral health, patients of all ages should have a dental exam and cleaning every six months. A dental exam is a diagnostic evaluation of your overall oral health and hygiene. During this biannual dental appointment, Dr. Williams and his experienced team of dental assistants and hygienists will:

  • Examine your teeth for signs of decay or periodontal disease
  • Examine your gums for signs of bacterial accumulation or infection
  • Evaluate your bite/jaw function
  • Screen your mouth for signs of oral cancer

You will need digital dental x-rays periodically. If your mouth is in good health, this may only be necessary every 12-18 months. If you have dental restorations, or if Dr. Williams finds any sign of decay or damage, you may need x-rays more frequently. At our technologically advanced dental practice, all x-rays are done digitally which reduces radiation exposure and offers improved diagnostic capabilities.

Dr. Williams will also perform an oral cancer exam. This involves feeling around the cheeks, gums, and tongue, under the jaw, and the sides of the neck for signs of oral cancer.
